People in business used to think that social problems could not be fixed with business. When in reality businesses that are the ones that can solve the issues at hand because they have profits and resources that can help tackle the issues society face today. Michael Porter has an inspiring Ted Talk, “The Case for Letting Business Solve Social Problems.” In his presentation he pointed out that 20.1 trillion of revenue are in corporations while 4.3 trillion are between nonprofits and government respectfully. Businesses can help make the problems of homelessness be a smaller problem in the future.

With the help of social entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs, and activists homelessness can be dealt with better. Entrepreneurs can create organizations and institutions like Jersey Cares to tackle the problem. Intrapreneurs can promote and develop strategic methods to get the word out and again follower-ship, through social media platforms. The activists can implement the physical strategies the intra/entrepreneurs to get the ball rolling.

Nonprofit organizations and government institutions are doing their part to help the situation of homelessness. Carpenter Shelter, the Robin Hood Foundation and the US Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) are examples of nonprofit and government programs which aid in the battle of homelessness. Though these programs all require the help of funding, donations, or taxes to get revenue. Some big businesses such as Amazon donate large amounts of money to some of the foundations and they have scaled a significant amount. That is the problem, these organizations have to rely on the help of others in order to scale and be able to make an impact on society. Businesses can be the solutions because they make profits and can use that money to tackle the problems we have in society. Of course, it’s on the entrepreneurs discretion what they want to do with their profits. It’s their hard work that make profits. We can’t just ask them to give us their money. With their help though, the myth of social issues being resolved by businesses because it’s uncompetitive can be thrown out the window. Businesses is the way to move forward in making a change in society.
